Spring driven clocks were also made as portable devices. Its handiness became possible because of the development of the mainspring that serves as its power source. The first worn watches were made during the 16th century. During this time, clock-watches were clipped to clothes or displayed through a chain on the neck. Timepieces were then as big as a shoebox and were carved with intricate designs. In the olden times, these timepieces only had an hour hand and faces grilled with brass instead of a glass fixture like what clocks or wristwatches have today. As time went by, the pocket watch came into style. Men transitioned from wearing timepieces on their necks to putting it on their pockets while women still wore it as pendants until the 20th century.

This timepiece worn by soldiers was then called trench watch. In the 1950's electric timepieces came into view.
